Chapter Nine

Henry sat in the chair next to the bed, gazing at his ill father, listening to the beep, beep, beep of the heart monitor. His dat looked pale. An IV drip was attached to his left arm and he lay as still as death. If it weren’t for the rhythmic heart sound, he might have thought his father had died. He sensed movement on the other side of his parent’s bed. He glanced over and saw his mother stir in her chair. She had fallen asleep and he hadn’t the heart to wake her. They’d been at the hospital since late yesterday afternoon after his father had cried out and gripped his chest, and Henry had known that he’d suffered a second heart attack, this one much worse than the first one.

He rose from his seat and skirted the hospital bed, coming to stand at his mother’s side. He placed a hand gently on her shoulder. “Mam, may I get you something to eat or drink?” he said softly. “You need to keep up your strength.”

Mam released a shuddering sigh. “I could use a cup of tea.”

Henry lightly squeezed his mother’s shoulder. “I’ll get it and come right back.” He hunkered down so that he could directly meet her gaze. “He’s going to be fine.”

He saw her swallow hard. “I hope so.”

“He will,” he insisted. He stood and smiled at her tenderly. “I’ll be right back.”

She acknowledged his comment with a nod, and he left the room and headed for the elevator. He, too, needed something to keep up his strength. Henry rode the elevator toward the lower level, where the cafeteria was located. He had a lot on his mind, with his father’s illness. The elevator stopped and, without thought, he got off, only to realize that he had stepped out on the wrong floor.

“Henry!” a familiar male voice called, and he saw Isaac and Leah. He felt a punch of gladness in his chest.

He managed a smile as he approached and met them halfway. “’Tis gut to see you, Isaac.” His gaze settled on Leah. His voice softened. “Leah. Danki for coming.”

“Are you oll recht?” Leah asked with genuine concern.

Henry shrugged. “Better than my dat.” He was tired, but seeing the two of them had raised his spirits.

“You look about ready to drop,” Isaac commented. “Were you headed home?”

He shook his head, aware of Leah’s study of him. “I’m going downstairs for something to eat.”

“May we come with you?” Leah asked shyly.

His heart melted as he met her gaze. “I’d like that.” She looked pretty in her Sunday-best royal blue dress with white prayer kapp, cape and apron. Her garment’s blue fabric accentuated the blue of her eyes, making them shimmer.

“Is he doing any better?” Isaac asked as they stepped into the elevator.

“I don’t know,” Henry admitted. “The doctor hasn’t given us an update.” He ran a hand through his dark hair. He was exhausted and so was his mother. He needed food quickly to keep up his strength.
